One of the most satisfying periods of my life was when I was working as a lecturer/adjunct faculty teaching grad students at U of M. My kids were young, life looked promising, and I was doing something I love. Part of me wishes I could go back to that time and reset a few things, but I'm also a realist. Life moves on, no?
I've opened and closed a few businesses here in Ann Arbor, and am an entrepreneur by nature. I have at least three business ideas in my head at all times, but need to hold off until I have the means to pursue them. I closed my largest business ever at the end of last year and am still finalizing that, but now I am making time for myself.
I am in a very satisfying job (it's strange not to be the head honcho) with a group of great people in a rapidly growing company with so much potential. I'm managing the software development team. I get to be a professional nerd.
I'm trying to be the best dad I can be for my two amazing kids, and make sure that they are taken care of and happy. Thanks to the advice of a friend, this is my main focus right now. I only have a few more years before they are both deep in the teen years (they are 9 and 12 as I type this), and we are super close and I intend to enjoy every moment of this time.
But now I am also making time for myself. That means I sometimes take a half day and ride my bike 75 to 100 miles and get some sweat going. It means having FUN with life and living it to the fullest. It means I get to take care of myself, something I've struggled with over the years as I found myself taking care of my family first, sacrificing myself along the way.
It means finding someone to go ape**** crazy with every once in a while. Maybe that's you. :-)
