Summary: I'm a California native recently transplanted to central Pennsylvania for my job as a biology professor. I love to explore new places through reading and travel - more the former than the latter now that the closest international airport is so far away. Also, while there are many things I appreciate about living in a small town, it's pretty difficult to find like-minded single people for activities and dating, especially if one is not religious. I'm smart, loyal, affectionate, reliable, and politically progressive, and I'm looking for the same traits in a partner.
What I'm doing with my life: I'm an assistant professor at a small liberal arts college. I love working in the lab with my research students and helping them to pursue their goals in science and in life. I purchased my first house last summer after almost two decades of dorm rooms, studios and one-bedroom apartments, so I have been slowly furnishing and updating that. It's nice to have the space to invite people over for meals, games, and book club meetings. I have strong political beliefs, read the news regularly and fire off a lot of emails to government officials. I don't know if it makes any difference, but I feel a little better. I demonstrated quite a bit as a grad student and postdoc, but I'm busier now, and the nearest metropolis is 3 hours' drive away.
I'm really good at reading, discussing books I've read, discussing books I haven't read yet, writing fanfiction, song parodies, and research abstracts; procrastinating productively; rolling for initiative, building the longest road, and curing a global Pandemic; following a good ballroom/social dance partner, traveling, photography, alphabetizing, recycling, composting, and color coordination; fitting in at the Renaissance Faire, naming classic Star Trek episodes, and staying in touch with old friends; identifying insects, whole mount brain dissection, and confocal microscopy. I also do a lot of cooking, like to hike, and have studied several languages besides English and Spanish in order to travel, but I wouldn't claim to be really good at those.
I am half Spanish and half Macanese, a recovering Catholic, and a biology/philosophy double major. You might guess that I do not identify strongly with any group in particular except for the liberal elite. My geeky obsessions have included Star Trek, Guns n' Roses, The X-Files, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and my favorite current tv shows are Bones and The Big Bang Theory. My favorite painter is Vermeer, my favorite singer/songwriter is Tori Amos, and picking a single favorite author would be impossible, but I love to be educated and entertained, preferably at the same time, so popular science, science fiction, biographies, and historical fiction rank high.
Enough rambling for now; I'll have to come back and revise this later, but I have to prepare for tomorrow's lecture!
